"Putin's ship opens fire" is the headline in the Daily Express - one of the many front pages to focus on the warning shots fired by a Russian frigate near a UK-registered yacht.

The Sun goes with: "Vlad fires on Brit OAPs in Channel".

The retired couple on board the yacht tell the i Paper that the encounter was "scary" and "totally unnecessary".

According to the Times, British defence sources have tried to "play down the incident" - but the Daily Telegraph describes it as "a fresh escalation of tensions with Moscow". The Daily Mail asks whether it will prompt the government to "wake up and boost defence spending".

An investigation by the Financial Times reveals that Russian saboteurs, who are said to have been behind arson attacks on property connected to Sir Keir Starmer, also recruited at least one other operative in London. The report highlights footage of an unidentified man with a distinctive tattoo spray painting an Islamic primary school. The paper says the discovery "raises questions about the failure of British authorities to bring charges" over the wider network.

The Times reports that Sir Keir Starmer's relationship with Ed Miliband has broken down since the energy secretary asked the prime minister to set out a timetable for his departure.

Government insiders tell the paper that Sir Keir was "furious" about what he viewed as a "betrayal". They accuse Miliband of "ghosting" him - refusing to take his calls during a stand-off over defence spending. A source close to the energy secretary denies the claims.

Angela Rayner tells the Daily Mirror that the by-election in Makerfield marks a "line in the sand" for Labour. The former deputy prime minister says the party has "a limited time" to prove it can deliver real change - insisting it is "not too late". Asked whether she would back Andy Burnham in a potential leadership contest, she says Labour needs to have its "best players around".
