The Bezos’ Presence At The Met Gala Is Getting Tons Of Hate Online — Because, Duh

It seems money can’t buy you everything. Billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, got an Amazon warehouse’s worth of hate on social media Monday during the 2026 Met Gala. The couple acted as honorary chairs and lead sponsors for this year’s event, and reportedly dropped $10 million in an attempt to pay their way into the fashion world. The real-time online vitriol shouldn’t come as too much of a shock, considering the uber-rich couple received backlash even before the event. When Vogue, which oversees the Met Gala, announced in February that the couple would serve as honorary chairs at this year’s fashion fete, a guerrilla activist group plastered posters all over New York City calling for a boycott of the star-studded event, The New York Times reported. It seems the couple was well aware they would receive some heat during the gala, because while Sánchez Bezos graced the red carpet in a Schiaparelli gown, Bezos reportedly skipped the red carpet entirely and reportedly snuck into the event. Critics’ main qualm was of the eat-the-rich variety. The gala, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, has morphed into a vehicle for offering certain celebrities a high degree of fashion clout. The event also epitomizes, as the Times put it, “the country’s yawning wealth inequality,” and the couple’s presence intensified fears that we are indeed living in another Gilded Age. It didn’t help that the couple have aligned themselves with the Trump administration, and their presence at the Met Gala signified that Vogue was cool with that. It should also be noted that Sánchez Bezos is not considered a fashion pioneer and tends to follow trends rather than start them. Vogue did seem to attempt to soft-launch Sánchez Bezos as a fashion girly by publishing a photo of her in her wedding dress on its June 2025 digital cover. But when the couple’s invitations for their nuptials in Venice, Italy, were published online, the design cemented their reputation for pretty basic taste. With that in mind, haters drank their hater-aid and went off on the couple on X Monday night: Yaaaas give us nothing Lauren Sanchez! She’s dressed like she’s going to an Amazon party… pic.twitter.com/gkk4OUKYKI “you’re not a visionary, you’re just a vendor” https://t.co/2TZ9lKLvjA It’s giving David’s Bridal. All the money in the world only to look like a teacher at a prom pic.twitter.com/2lNjL2EIwc chop! imagine being a disgusting billionaire, that can afford anything, and this is the best you can do... boring Is the dress from Amazon? https://t.co/A6f6GJKmMJ As far as the Met Gala controversy is concerned, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s obscene wealth is really secondary to their generational lack of coolness. Sorry losers but you can’t buy swag or good taste — your party sucks! https://t.co/EdeaIus548 pic.twitter.com/BomOlaCwJX By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
