Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) tried to justify the sharp rise in gas and consumer prices sparked by President Donald Trump’s war with Iran with an eyebrow-raising historical comparison this week.

Appearing on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America” on Tuesday, the GOP lawmaker was asked how long he thinks people will be willing to pay the sky-high prices, and responded with this:

“I think back to my grandparents and their generation that served in World War II. Could you imagine, you know, trying to tell the president, ‘Look, you only got so many days to defeat Hitler or defeat Japan.’ We have to do it until we get the outcome that we want.”

Noting that he hopes that the war lasts weeks and not months, Marshall continued, “But at the end of the day, Americans are going to be safer …So I’m sorry the gas prices are going up, but help is on its way, and your national security, yes, is even more important than your pocketbook.”

Moments before, he gloated that Trump is “keeping the world safe” and also invoked North Korea.

“Could you imagine an Iran with nuclear weapons? Think of North Korea on steroids,” he said. “Think of North Korea times a thousand. These people, this theocracy, they’re irrational. They’re lunatics. They’re religious zealots, they shout, ‘Death to America! Death to Israel.’”

Marshall also called Trump’s blockade of Iranian ports to force Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz a “great jujitsu move.”

“We’re going to stop Iran’s financial funding. There’s not much left of them. I think this is a great move, and it’s going to get us to the endgame here sooner than later,” he added.
