Hamilton Southeastern Schools Superintendent Pat Mapes announced Monday that he will resign from his position—effective April 13. In a message sent to HSE families and staff, the superintendent said during his tenure the district focused on teaching and learning. Mapes added they strengthened classroom instruction and built more consistent professional development centered on student work and data. According to Mapes, HSE Schools achieved the highest IREAD-3 scores and graduation rates in district history. He said his focus since taking the job has been on strengthening academics in a district “already strong.” Mapes said improvements came while maintaining financial stability and increasing transparency about challenges ahead. “After careful consideration, I have decided that the time is right for me to step aside,” Mapes said. The HSE Board of School Trustees is expected to release details about the transition process in the coming days. The superintendent said he has confidence in the district’s leadership and believes the work happening in classrooms will continue uninterrupted. Mapes previously served as superintendent of the Perry Township School District for seven years before announcing his retirement in 2022.
